Where to Visit

Byron Bay

Known for its golden beaches and laid-back lifestyle, Byron Bay is a must-see on any New South Wales itinerary. Enjoy the coastal walk to Cape Byron Lighthouse and stand on the most easterly point of the Australian mainland. Get close to local wildlife and kayak with wild dolphins or swim with sea turtles, which can be experienced year-round. Sample local produce and pick up artisan products at the markets in Bangalow

Port Stephens

Just over 200km north of Sydney is the popular bay area of Port Stephens, which is home to over 150 bottlenose dolphins that play in the waters year-round. Enjoy a dolphin-watching tour or get up close with kayak tours from Nelson Bay.

South Coast & Jervis Bay

Head south of Sydney and join the Grand Pacific Drive, which first winds through the Royal National Park before continuing on to Wollongong and beyond. Jervis Bay is the jewel in the crown of the New South Wales South Coast with pristine white sand beaches, spectacular cliffs and abundant wildlife including whales (May to Nov), dolphins, kangaroos, seals and an array of native birds.

Food and Wine

Sydney is home to some of the world’s best restaurants and the city’s chefs pride themselves on using local produce in innovative ways. We love brunching at the beach watching the surfers ride the waves; eating fresh seafood overlooking the Sydney Opera House; and having a nightcap in one of the many glamorous bars! Beyond Sydney passionate producers and restaurateurs ensure that regional restaurants are equally fabulous. Travelling outside of the city also gives you the opportunity to explore some of the country’s wonderful foodie trails, vineyards and farmers’ markets. You’ll never forget the taste of slow cooked lamb from the Central Tablelands or freshly shucked oysters from the South Coast. Roughly two hours north of Sydney lies the spectacular Hunter Valley, Australia’s oldest wine region. Sample award-winning wines and learn more about the wine-making process by visiting one of 120 cellar doors, from boutique wineries to famous family names.

Nature and Wildlife

You can discover some extraordinary natural wonders just a short distance from Sydney, including beautiful beaches, rainforests, marine parks, outback landscapes, mountains and lakes. One of our favourite spots is the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains, just a 90 minute drive from Sydney. We love the walking trails, Aboriginal heritage, gorgeous views and array of places to eat and sleep. For a hit of Aussie wildlife visit the world’s first Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie or see kangaroos at Pebbly Beach. Port Stephens and Jervis Bay are home to resident dolphins, whilst whales can be seen along the coast from May to November. World Heritage-listed Lord Howe Island (a two hour flight from Sydney) is home to unique plants, animals and birds. In Sydney we recommend enjoying the outdoor lifestyle on the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk (6km), and keen surfers and beginners alike can find great waves at many of Sydney’s gorgeous beaches.

Festivals and Events in Sydney and New South Wales

Sydney and New South Wales host a variety of exciting festivals and events all year round. From sporting and music events in Sydney and regional New South Wales to the colourful Mardi Gras Parade, the most spectacular fireworks display at New Year’s Eve and the largest festival of music, light and ideas, Vivid Sydney. Vivid Sydney runs for 23 nights each year and features extraordinary lighting sculptures and illuminations across Sydney, a contemporary music program, creative industry forums and spectacular illuminations of the Sydney Opera House sails. From 24th May to 15th June 2019, Vivid Sydney will celebrate its 11th year and will be bigger and brighter than ever, with an expanded program spawning across Sydney harbour and new precincts.
