Special Baggage

Bulky and Oversized Baggage

Oversized bag is any bag that exceeds the allowable maximum dimension. Oversized bag is one of more than 62 linear inches (height + width + length).

The overall measurement of each checked-in piece (length + width + height) must be less than 62 in (158 cm) and weigh less than 32 kg (70 lb.) This is for safe working conditions for all baggage agents. Any bag whose linear dimensions (length + width + height) are between 158 and 204 cm is considered oversized.

Baggage whose linear dimensions exceed 204 cm (80 in) will not be accepted as checked-in or carry-on luggage. Passenger has to refer to MABkargo or alternate air cargo company or freight carrier.

Maximum Single Item Weight

Each carrier will determine a maximum single item weight for checked baggage taking into account:

  • Any local legislation or health and safety requirements.
  • Any other applicable limits for transfer baggage.

Specific rules may apply for: AVIH, WCH, musical instruments and large sports equipment.

For some types of special baggage, advance reservations should be made. MAB may refuse acceptance if deemed necessary.

Cabin Seat Baggage (CBBG)

Cabin Seat Baggage refers to any baggage that is not usually suitable for loading in the aircraft hold. Such baggage may include:

  • Musical instruments.
  • Works of art.
  • Electronic equipment.
  • Diplomatic baggage.
  • Valuable baggage.

Musical instruments can be carried in the cabin or cargo compartment. The size and shape will determine the uplift method.

Small instruments may be carried in the cabin as carry-on baggage, e.g. flute, violin or saxophone.

Large instruments may be carried in the cabin occupying an additional seat, e.g. cello, piano accordion or guitar. An extra seat must be purchased.

Larger instruments must be carried in the cargo hold as checked baggage, e.g. double bass or trombone.

Musical instruments can be carried as checked baggage if appropriately packed. If a passenger wishes to transport a large bulky instrument (e.g. cello) in the cabin, an extra seat must be purchased.
