Exempted items If you have special needs items such as medicine, baby milk or food, or items to cater for special dietary requirements during your flight, you can bring them on board with you. Do ensure you have the required documents that show you have special medical or dietary needs and present them when passing through airport security. Families travelling with children below the age of seven may bring baby milk or food into the cabin. Liquids, aerosols, and gels (LAGs) purchased on the day of your travels from the Airport Duty Free Shops or on-board the aircraft are allowed in the cabin. Do ensure that your purchases are packed in sealed plastic bags and the proofs of purchase for them are in clear view so it’s easier and quicker for airport officers to check, verify and clear you to bring them on board.
Only AVMED-approved dry liquid nitrogen shippers carrying human embryo samples are permitted as checked or cabin baggage.
If you need to use solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) to pack perishables (which are not subject to Dangerous Goods Regulations) in your cabin baggage, please note that the dry ice amount should not exceed 2.5kg (5lb) per passenger. You will also need to declare the dry ice as cabin baggage when booking or checking in. Seafood (fresh or frozen) cannot be checked in and may only be carried on board as cabin baggage. This is subject to the quarantine regulations of your destination country and provided the seafood is properly packed (the use of crushed ice for this purpose is not permitted) and meets cabin baggage size and weight requirements.
Checked baggage
Baggage dimensions Each piece of baggage you check in must have linear dimensions (length + height + width) of less than 158cm or 62in. A bag is considered oversized if its linear dimensions are between 158cm-204cm or 62in-80in. It may be subject to a surcharge. For even larger pieces of baggage that exceed 204cm or 80in, MASKargo is able to assist you.
Each piece of checked bag cannot weigh more than 32kg or 70lb for Business Suite/ Business Class and 23kg or 50lb for Economy Class. The number of bags you can check in is determined by your cabin class. Do check the weight limits before booking your ticket to ensure you have enough baggage allowance for your journey. If your luggage is longer or wider than the dimensions specified above, you may need to ship it as freight instead of baggage.
Should you require it, we’d be happy to transport any personal medical equipment such as wheelchairs and walking aids; or infant care equipment such as strollers, baby seats, car seats and playpens – at no additional cost. This service is available to all ticket holders. Please see below for additional details.
Note: There are no weight restrictions on pieces of luggage at check-in. The current additional checked luggage allowance for oneworld travellers will be the same. Any extra luggage must be purchased. Free Baggage Allowance (FBA) for travellers travelling on ONLY Economy and Malaysia Airlines Domestic lines has been reduced to 20kg as of 1 August 2018. The following policies on baggage remain unchanged: The permitted number of articles and luggage dimensions remain unchanged. Existing Enrich Platinum/Gold/Silver Free Baggage Allowance entitlements are not affected. The existing Business Class FBA entitlement of 40kg remains in effect. Passengers who were ticketed using a Government (GOM) warrant are also unaffected. They continue to be eligible for 30kg Free Baggage Allowance on Malaysia Airlines Domestic routes.
Special baggage
Bulky and oversized baggage Any bag that has linear dimensions (length + height + width) larger than 158cm or 62in, or weighs over 32kg or 70lb is considered oversized and may be subject to a surcharge. You may consult MASKargo or a similar logistics service provider for assistance with even larger pieces of baggage that have linear dimensions greater than 204cm or 80in.
There is a maximum single-item weight for checked baggage based on local health and safety laws & regulations and other relevant baggage restrictions. For some types of special baggage, reservations are required. While we do our best to avoid it, Malaysia Airlines may also deny acceptance of certain pieces of baggage if necessary.
Items that are unsuitable for loading in the aeroplane hold are referred to as Cabin Seat Baggage. Such items include musical instruments, artwork, electronic devices, and diplomatic or other valuable items. Musical instruments For our musically gifted passengers, here are our recommendations for ensuring your instruments travel with you safely: Small instruments such as flutes, saxophones or violins can be brought onboard as cabin baggage. Large, delicate instruments like cellos, pianos, guitars or accordions may be carried in the cabin - taking up an additional purchased seat. For large but more durable instruments such as a trombone or double bass, we recommend carrying them as checked baggage.
For athletically-inclined travellers, we want to ensure that all your gear will arrive safely with you – ready for action. Thus we advise that the following sports equipment be appropriately packed in protective materials: Golfing equipment Windsurfing boards and surfboards Masts and sailboards Canoes Non-motorised bikes Fishing gear Archery supplies Bowling equipment Archery supplies Hunting gear Parachutes Sporting weapons and ammunition Scuba gear Snow- and water-skiing gear

Frequently asked questions
Fragile items
Fragile Items Fragile or perishable objects, cash, jewellery, precious metals, electronics, silver, negotiable documents, business paperwork, passports, and other identifying documents or samples are not permitted in checked baggage.
We do accept fragile objects if they are packed and padded in factory-sealed shipping boxes designed to hold the item under inspection, cardboard tubes for sending letters, carrying cases or shipping containers made specifically for this purpose. A release form must be signed in order for fragile objects to be accepted without the proper packing. We also reserve the right to deny acceptance of any fragile items at our discretion. Delay in delivery of certain types of checked luggage may occur due to the unsuitability of such items as checked baggage and/or the inadequacy of their packing which may put them at risk of damage.

Seafood can only be transported as cabin baggage. Weapons such as novelty or antique firearms, swords, knives, and similar items may be accepted as checked baggage as per Malaysia Airlines regulations but will not be permitted in the cabin.
Carriage of self-heating meals or ready-to-eat meals on board Malaysia Airlines flights Due to safety concerns, any form of self-heating meals or ready-to-eat meals carried in checked or cabin baggage by passengers or crew are now prohibited on all Malaysia Airlines flights.
