Malaysia Aviation Group Sealed Three Strategic Partnerships to Strengthen Commitment in Sustainable Aviation; MRO Capabilities and Training
Langkawi, 25 May 2023: Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) today sealed three strategic partnerships with key industry players during the 2023 Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) to strengthen its position in the fields of sustainable aviation; maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) capabilities, and the development of skilled aviation engineers. The partnerships will also leverage on capabilities to support national and global agendas including MAG’s commitment of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and the Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) agenda for the aviation sector. The signing ceremonies were witnessed by the Minister of Transport Malaysia, YB Anthony Loke Siew Fook and Deputy Minister of Transport Malaysia, YB Datuk Haji Hasbi bin Habibollah. Captain Izham Ismail, Group Managing Director of MAG said, “We are pleased to enter collaborative agreements with our strategic partners to elevate our efforts towards the sustainable growth and nation building within the aviation sector, whilst simultaneously supporting the national and global agendas. We look forward to working with more strategic partners as we cement our vision of becoming Asia’s leading travel and aviation services group in line with our Long-Term Business Plan 2.0 aspirations.” Offtake Agreement with Petronas Dagangan Berhad (PDB) MAG has signed a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) offtake agreement with PDB as part of collaborative efforts to make the first SAF production available in Malaysia at a commercial scale. Through this partnership, MAG has indicated its readiness to purchase the SAF from PDB as part of its commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, with the first delivery scheduled to begin from 2027 at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The SAF will be utilised on flights operated by national carrier Malaysia Airlines, and subsequently to sister airlines Firefly and MASwings. To commemorate the significant occasion during LIMA, Minister of Transport YB Anthony Loke Siew Fook’s inbound flight MH7360 to Langkawi was powered by SAF. Service Provider Agreement with Spirit AeroSystems MAB Engineering has been appointed as an Authorised Repair Centre by Spirit AeroSystems, allowing it to perform Nacelle and Flight Control Surfaces repairs and services under agreed-upon terms and conditions. The partnership will broaden the scope of MRO capabilities for other aircraft types to jointly provide value-added MRO services in-country to support MAG’s aircraft fleet and other third-party aircraft operators/lessors in the region; further enhancing its in-house capabilities of components and enhancing its range of services. As part of this agreement, Spirit AeroSystems will also provide MAB Engineering with comprehensive training programmes and access to tooling and rotable components, enabling MAB Engineering to deliver high quality services to its customers. MOU with Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran (JPK) MAB Engineering and JPK will jointly collaborate in the talent development of the Aircraft Engineering & Maintenance industry, with the appointment of MAB Engineering Training as an approved training organisation by JPK. This will further accelerate Malaysia’s TVET agenda in producing highly skilled workforce to meet the skill requirements and support the growth of the aviation industry. The MoU covers the sharing of expertise between JPK and MAB Engineering learning materials, training facilities and personnel via the implementation of the Malaysia Skill Certification System (SPKM) in MAB Engineering Training, where a series of accreditation for the issuance of JPK Malaysia Skilled Certificate (SKM), Diploma (DKM) and Advanced Diploma (DLKM) shall be obtained.
