Tapestry of Tradition: Malaysia Airlines’ Nostalgic Tribute

In celebration of 50 years of flights between Kuala Lumpur and London, Malaysia Airlines unveils the evolution of our iconic kebaya uniforms.

A TAPESTRY OF TRADITION

Malaysia Airlines unveils a nostalgic tribute to our iconic kebaya uniforms.

In a dazzling celebration of 50 years of flights between Kuala Lumpur and London, Malaysia Airlines showcased the evolution of our timeless kebaya uniforms on flights between the two cities from 3 November to 16 November 2024. Each iteration of these ensembles seen onboard the flights proved to be a thread in the vibrant tapestry of Malaysia’s rich heritage and cultural pride. As Malaysia Airlines commemorates this golden milestone, we invite travellers on a journey through time, to experience our heritage and the cultural significance that these uniforms represent. Stepping onboard, passengers are immediately immersed in an atmosphere that embodies the essence of Malaysian Hospitality. Every detail, from the elegant designs of the uniforms to the warm, attentive service, was thoughtfully curated to create memorable journeys that linger long after the flights have landed. This was more than a tribute; it's a heartfelt homage to our storied past and a bold declaration of our commitment to excellence. The celebration not only honours the past but also propels us forward, forging deeper connections with global audiences and reinforcing our promise of exceptional service. Malaysia Airlines solidifies its identity through this unique celebration, marking not just 50 years of flights, but 50 years of heartfelt, unforgettable journeys.

1963 Worn by our cabin crew from 1963 to 1967, this chilli red kebaya featured a hip-length bodice top in the traditional kutu baru style with a central panel. Paired with a skirt, or sarung wiron, with nine vertical pleats, this ensemble seamlessly blended tradition with modernity and style with practicality.

1967 This earth-toned beauty with its bright yellow pattern against a brown canvas was introduced on an inaugural flight from Singapore to Perth. This kebaya was worn exclusively on international flights.

1972 After the dissolution of Malaysia Singapore Airlines (MSA), the newly-formed Malaysian Airlines System (MAS) introduced uniforms that featured both traditional and modern patterns, symbolising a new identity for the airline.

1976 This marked the beginning of an exciting new era for Malaysian Airlines System (MAS) with the introduction of the DC-10 aircraft. The kebaya uniform was revamped in hues of green, blue and yellow, reflecting the youthful exuberance and vigour of our rising airline. The cabin crew wore the green kebaya, a colour representing Malaysia's lush natural wealth and the peaceful coexistence of its diverse population.

1986 Malaysia Airlines decided that it was time to unveil a new uniform that combined Malaysian traditions, natural beauty, art and fashion. Designed by creatives from the School of Fashion Design at the Institute of Technology MARA, the ensemble featured Malaysian batik and Sarawakian kelarai elements, making this kebaya a visual ode to Malaysia's rich and diverse legacy.

1992 This version of the kebaya was a revamped iteration by Italian fashion house, Gherardini. Presented in ottania green, enhanced with yellow and purple flowers native to Malaysia, it maintained the iterations of batik and kelarai from the previous ensemble.

2024 The current Malaysia Airlines' female cabin crew uniform is recognised as one of the world's most beautiful cabin crew uniforms. Updating the Gherardini reiteration from 1992 with deeper hues of pink and purple, the current kebaya uniform melds bamboo and kelarai motifs with local flowers—champak, jasmine and hibiscus— combining Malaysian fauna and traditional art elements in a traditional batik tableau.
