Malaysia Airlines Launches Voluntary Carbon Offset Programme in Collaboration with CHOOOSE
KLIA, 21 June 2023 — Malaysia Airlines has become the first airline in Malaysia to launch a voluntary carbon offset programme. The initiative enables individuals and corporate customers to calculate, understand, and offset the carbon emissions associated with their flights by supporting verified carbon offsetting projects when booking flights through the airline’s website. The Carbon Offset Programme is implemented in collaboration with CHOOOSE , a leading climate tech company headquartered in Norway with partnerships around the world. This marks a milestone in Malaysia Aviation Group’s (MAG) commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, as outlined in the MAG Sustainability Blueprint. Through the Carbon Offset Programme, Malaysia Airlines’ customers will be provided with visibility into the carbon emissions generated by their flights during the booking process. Customers are provided with the option to offset their emissions from the flight by supporting high-quality carbon projects certified by internationally recognised certification standards and aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The funds paid to address the traveller’s carbon emissions will be used to support projects that reduce, capture, or avoid greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in an amount equivalent to that of the calculated carbon footprint of the journey. Philip See, Group Chief Sustainability Officer of MAG said: "As Malaysia’s flag bearer, we are proud to play our role in accelerating industry-wide efforts to decarbonise the aviation industry. With the launch of the Carbon Offset Programme, Malaysia Airlines customers are provided with transparency to actively mitigate their carbon footprint and contribute to a greener future, as we collectively take significant steps toward our commitment of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and ensure a Sustainable Tomorrow for all.” With precise calculations based on the latest industry standards, customers can gain a deeper understanding of the carbon impact of their journey. This empowers them to make more sustainable travel choices that align with their environmental values. The certified climate projects selected by MAG, in collaboration with industry experts, encompass a diverse range of initiatives implemented across the ASEAN region. In addition to their climate impact, the supported projects protect and restore peatland ecosystems, reduce deforestation and degradation, and provide capacity building and income generation to improve the livelihoods of marginalised communities, amongst other benefits. The projects are certified by Verra, the developer of the world’s leading standards for climate action and sustainable development, ensuring that they meet environmental integrity and high-quality standards.
