MAG and MAHB Revolutionise Malaysian Aviation Industry with First-Ever e-GSE Infrastructure Unveiling at Selangor Aviation Show 2023

Petaling Jaya, 7 Sept 2023 – Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) have taken a monumental step forward in the Malaysian aviation industry by introducing the nation’s pioneering Electric Ground Support Equipment (e-GSE) infrastructure, marking a significant milestone for the Malaysian aviation industry. The launch event, which coincided with the Selangor Aviation Show 2023 (SAS2023) at SkyPark RAC Subang, received the distinguished presence of YAB Dato' Seri Amirudin bin Shari, the Chief Minister of Selangor, along with senior executives from MAG and MAHB respectively. The groundbreaking initiative, known as the Electric Ground Power Unit (e-GPU), promises to play a pivotal role in reducing carbon emissions and noise pollution within the aviation sector. By replacing traditional non-diesel-powered GPU with sustainable electric alternatives, MAG and MAHB are taking substantial strides towards environmental responsibility and a greener future. This collaboration also signifies a momentous occasion as MAG and MAHB join forces to develop the first e-GSE infrastructure in the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (Subang Airport) and soon at KL International Airport (KLIA). In an era where the aviation industry sets its sights on a greener future, the collaboration between MAG and MAHB serves as a beacon of innovation and ecological awareness. The introduction of Malaysia’s first e-GSE infrastructure at Subang Airport signifies a significant leap towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions, ensuring a more sustainable aviation industry for future generations. Philip See Yew Jin, Group Chief Sustainability Officer (MAG), expressed excitement about this ground-breaking venture, stating, "Our innovative e-GSE infrastructure marks a historic milestone, signifying our pivotal role in reshaping Malaysia's aviation with MAHB. MAG proudly leads sustainability efforts at Subang Airport, focusing on reducing both airborne and ground emissions. This initiative will not just impact the environment but also provide an opportunity for better cost management and process improvement. In fact, the eGPU reduces 50,000kgs of CO2 emission with less than 65db(A) noise emission compared to the diesel GPU.” Dato’ Sri Iskandar Mizal Mahmood, Managing Director of MAHB echoed this sentiment, saying, “We are delighted to collaborate with MAG on the e-GSE infrastructure. This initiative underscores MAHB’s commitment to advancing sustainability across our airport operations, aligning with our broader mission to adopt eco-friendly infrastructure and practices. Subang Airport, the Business Aviation and the Aerospace Ecosystem as part of the total Subang Airport Regeneration Program (SARPP) will encompass environmentally-friendly initiatives and as such the e-GSE infrastructure announced today aligns perfectly with our sustainability visions for this project and our commitment in sustainable development as we contribute towards the nation’s aerospace ecosystem.” MAG, alongside its regional airline counterparts, is spearheading sustainable practices by investing in an electric Ground Power Unit (e-GPU), and the accompanying infrastructure, developed in collaboration with MAHB. This investment sets the stage for the widespread adoption of electric Ground Support Equipment throughout the aviation industry. The Selangor Aviation Show 2023 not only highlights the remarkable transformation of Subang Airport into Malaysia’s first green airport but also serves as a celebration of the aviation industry's unwavering commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. This commitment is underscored by the introduction of e-GSE infrastructure, a major step towards reducing the industry's environmental footprint.
