Important Updates on Our In-Flight Meal Services

Effective 1 September 2023, Malaysia Airlines is temporarily adjusting its in-flight meal offerings on specific domestic and international routes as we transition to a new catering service provider. During this period, guests may encounter some modifications to the usual in-flight meals. Guests travelling on the affected routes will receive revised meal offerings tailored to their class of travel and flight duration. We will make progressive improvements to the meal offerings to ensure you have a satisfying in-flight dining experience. During this time, most of our medium and long-haul flights remain unaffected by the catering transition and will continue to be served the full in-flight meal offerings. This includes flights departing from Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to Auckland (AKL), Jeddah (JED), Madinah (MED), London (LHR), and Osaka (KIX). Rest assured, Malaysia Airlines is dedicated to minimising any inconvenience and maintaining its renowned Malaysian Hospitality onboard whilst we actively work towards introducing new in-flight meal services in the coming months. What happened to Malaysia Airlines’ in-flight caterer? The longstanding contract between Malaysia Airlines and its anchor caterer, Brahim's Food Services (BFS), based in Kuala Lumpur ended on 31 August 2023 after both parties were unable to achieve an amicable agreement. Will guests receive in-flight meals during the transition of in-flight catering? All our guests will be provided with meals and/or refreshments on their flights. Only certain flights may receive revised meal offerings, depending on their class of travel and flight duration. Kindly check here for the updated list of affected routes. What changes can I expect in the menu? Most of the medium to long-haul flights remain unaffected. Guests travelling on affected flights will receive revised meal offerings based on their class of travel and the flight's duration. These offerings may include Malaysia Airlines' signature peanuts and drinks, snacks in ready-to-go boxes with pre-packaged items like pastries, sweets, biscuits, and drinks, or meals served in disposable containers along with pre-packaged items such as pastries or dessert on a simplified tray setup. During this transition, there will be modifications to the regular offerings, however, we are committed to maintaining high standards in providing a pleasant dining experience for our guests. We are progressively working on introducing improvements and innovations to ensure our guests continue to enjoy high-quality meals while flying with us. When will the meal adjustments take effect? The change in meal offerings will take effect from 1 September 2023. Please note that during this transition period, the availability of hot meals will be gradually reinstated on affected routes. What are the non-affected routes due to the in-flight catering transition? Flights operated by Malaysia Airlines departing from Kuala Lumpur to (KUL) to Auckland (AKL), Jeddah (JED), Madinah (MED), London (LHR) and Osaka (KIX) remain unaffected. For other routes, we've made some adjustments to our meal offerings. Guests on affected routes will be kept informed via email and SMS. What measures are in place to ensure food safety and hygiene? In the absence of a full-on airline caterer, the MAG Catering operations (MCAT) is established as a temporary distribution centre in KLIA, to manage the assembly of F&B items by respective suppliers and the uplifting of meal boxes onboard via high lift trucks. MCAT is not a cooking facility. Its operations are in accordance with standards set by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) and is endorsed by the local health authorities for its cleanliness, hygiene and environment – meeting food safety and hygiene standard. Will there be any impact on the pre-order special meal service such as Chef-on-Call, meal upgrade and pre-booked meals? Yes, during this transition, all pre-order special meal services will be temporarily unavailable on affected routes and will be reinstated in phases. Guests who have pre-booked special dietary in-flight meals will receive meal vouchers at the check-in counter to purchase meals at selected airport food outlets. Additionally, regular and vegetarian meal options will still be offered to all guests onboard the flight. Can I still bring my own meals on board? Yes, you can bring your own meals on board. As a standard practice for full-service carriers (FSC), all guests are permitted to bring their own meals onboard but must comply with international regulations from the departing airport on the liquid, aerosol, and gel (LAG) requirements. When will things go back to normal? Malaysia Airlines remains focused to introduce new in-flight meals in the upcoming months as we work with our new partners to further enhance our onboard offerings. Will lounge services also be affected? Not at all. Our lounge services are operated by a different service provider and will not be affected by these changes. You can continue to enjoy the same excellent lounge experience as before. Will I get any compensation for this product change? Will there be any reduction on ticket prices due to this product change? Malaysia Airlines strives to offer a comparative meal offering in lieu of the normal meal services rendered. Hence, no compensation will be offered to customers. Will this in-flight catering transition affect the timing of my flights? We strive to ensure a seamless and uninterrupted experience for all our flights. Guests are not required to arrive at the airport any earlier than usual. Our check-in counters close 60 minutes before departure for domestic and international flights. Guests are encouraged to check-in via web or mobile check-in and come to the airport 3 – 4 hours before departure for baggage drop. The boarding gate closes 30 minutes before departure.
