Installation of Solar Panels

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), through its renewable energy retail arm, GSPARX Sdn Bhd (“GSPARX”) has inked an agreement with Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAB) to install solar panels on four of MAB’s buildings at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Under the Solar Supply Agreement (SSA), MAB is expected to save almost RM15 million in electricity bills throughout a 21-year period as they tap into GSPARX’s expertise in the installation and operation of rooftop solar PV panels.

The solar photovoltaic (PV) panels to be installed will have a capacity of 2.210 megawatt peak (MWp), capable of generating about 2.86 gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean energy per year. The project is the largest installation at a single site for GSPARX. The project will benefit MAB in its long-term pursuit of reducing CO2 emissions and to support the nation’s target of 20% RE by 2025. Completed in April 2021, the green energy generated from the project is expected to offset close to 5000 metric ton of carbon dioxide emission every year.

Waste Management

Cabin Waste Reduction Programme

Cabin waste is costing airlines money, consuming valuable resources, and undermining the sector’s sustainability credibility. In 2017, it is estimated that the airline industry produced up to 5.7 million tonnes of cabin waste which costs the sector US$ 927 million (IATA).

Since the past years – the In-Flight Operations team has been focusing on reducing waste by salvaging the items and repurpose some of the equipments.

Scheduled Waste Management

Scheduled waste management in an efficient way is a necessary step to be taken in this developing world. Wastes management that are produced by ADS activities starts with the collection of it from the source. Once the scheduled waste is carefully collected, segregated and stored, then will be transported to appropriate places for disposal by a certified service provider. ADS devoted to adhere the environmental policy  outlined by MAG and all related agency to support the sustainability efforts and responsible operations.

In-flight Beverage Carton Recycling: An Initiative by Firefly Airlines & Tetra Pak Malaysia

Firefly Airlines had taken its first step into recycling its in-flight beverage cartons by working together with Tetra Pak Malaysia. Although it is a known fact that it is challenging to recycle in-flight items, Firefly had discovered a way to be able to help preserve the environment in addition to providing more usable objects to people without the need for extra resources.

Firefly Airlines changed its logo to green as part of sustainability campaign

Firefly Airlines changed its logo from orange to green as part of a week-long campaign "We Are Going Green" campaign, to show its love for mother earth and lead simple efforts to protect the environment.

Firefly launched its sustainable in-flight products

To coincide with the relaunch of FY B737-800 flights from Penang, the inclusion of recyclable and biodegradable products were used for in-flight catering and merchandise.

MASwings Care for the Nature

MASwings in collaboration with MAB team, Malaysia Airport and NGOs has conducted several gotong-royong programmes in the effort to minimise human impact on the environment.

Beach cleaning initiated by MASwings in collaboration with MAB team and Malaysian Nature Society (NGO). A truck load of rubbish was collected that consist of plastic bottles, food containers, glass bottles, rusted metal, and other general items.

Housekeeping project in collaboration with MAB team to dispose of old document and files for recycling. This project has resulted in addition storage space for all the Business units. Check-in counters clean up in collaboration with MAG team and Malaysia Airport. The project was to remove old baggage tag, boarding pass, and papers not accessible during daily cleaning. To coincide with the relaunch of FY B737-800 flights from Penang, the inclusion of recyclable and biodegradable products were used for in-flight catering and merchandise.

ADS Quarterly Recycling Programme

ADS take seriously on waste management because not only will save natural resources, but also impact the economy in a positive way through biodiversity and human life.

ADS conducted quarterly recycling programme by recycling the materials we produced and help decrease our waste disposal costs. Having knowledge about the different kinds of waste ADS is creating, would make it easier to find waste management services according to the need and minimize the transportation costs. In addition to this, it helps environmental sustainability by minimizing emissions of greenhouse gases, preserving natural resources and steadily improve the operational efficiency by adopting digitalization as a new way of working.

MAG Quarterly Recycling Contest

MAG managed to roll-out the MAG Recycling Contest which eventually being held on quarterly basis. This program aims to promote awareness and education across all MAG employees on the importance of reducing waste going to the landfill and instead recycle them for a better environment.

This program does not limit on the office and operational waste, but also extended to the waste generated at home where employees able to keep aside and submit upon collection period. Few collection points across MAG premises have been selected to facilitate and ease the submission process which inclusive of Sepang and Kelana Jaya, hence employees working from home also get the opportunity to participate and contribute to the program as well.

Collaborating with Alam Flora and Fastreen Cleaning Services, even smoothen the flow as they manage to provide on-site resources throughout the journey. This also enable MAG employees to trade their recycled waste into cash on the spot. In the first round of collection, MAG managed to collect a total of 13.8 tonnes of recycle waste comprising of papers, plastics, metal and others.

MASwings Go-Green Initiatives

Go green initiative is the in thing now especially for corporate bodies such as MASwings. True to be told, it is already late for us to realise that this earth is getting old and polluted over the years BUT it will never be too late for us to start any initiative to protect and care for it.   Make it greener again!

Kudos to MASwings Support Services & Finance (SSF) team for their fast action to embark into MASwings’ Go Green initiatives.  The team has been organising a few late afternoon sessions for gardening and planting trees within MAB/MW Administration Building compound.  It is an ongoing and work in progress effort so far.  On top of that, they have also introduced decorating the office with various type of potted plants. The aim is to make the office looking fresh and soothing green at all time.

The Community Garden utilised recycle product such as recycle tires as plant pots, shredded paper as part of the fertiliser, rainwater collected in drum for watering the plants.
