MAS to Evacuate More Malaysians via Phase 2 of Egypt Rescue Mission
Subang, 10 February 2011 : Malaysia Airlines (MAS) is still ferrying students out or strife affected Cairo and will continue the mission until 12 February, 2011. More Malaysians are expected to arrive home by end of this week. To date MAS has already operated eleven flights and is expected to operate another five flights out of Cairo to Jeddah, to complete the mission.
In the first phase of the MAS evacuation from Cairo to Jeddah, the airline has evacuated a total of 3,431 Malaysians. Malaysia Airlines’ Director of Operations Captain Mohamed Azharuddin Osman conveyed his sincere appreciation to all those who had been directly involved in the Egypt Rescue Mission. He expressed his gratitude to all who have made this mission a huge success, especially to the team members who had spent long hours and sleepless nights.
“I am especially pleased at the fact that our team managed to handle these rescue flights and maintain the smooth operations of our existing commercial line to as many as 100 different destinations in six different continents. This is a feat to be extremely proud of,” he added.
Malaysia Airlines is committed to contributing to society in a meaningful and responsible manner. The rescue flight is not the first that Malaysia Airlines has participated in over the years. Through its partnership with Mercy Malaysia, the national carrier has provided aid and relief to victims of natural disasters like the tsunami in 2004, earthquake tragedies within Asia in 2005 and 2006, as well as the Johor flood disaster in 2006.“
