Malaysia Airlines And Maybank See Greater Use Of Debit Cards For Online Travel
Subang, 09 May 2011 : Malaysia Airlines and Maybank’s partnership to promote debit card use for e-commerce purchase of online air tickets saw a significant growth of 195% in billings and 145% in Maybank debit transactions during the three month campaign period compared with the corresponding period last year.
Malaysia Airlines Senior Vice President E-Commerce, Serena Ho and Maybank Executive Vice President Cards & Unsecured Lending, B. Ravintharan recently gave away prizes to winners at a prize presentation ceremony held at Malaysia Airlines Academy in Petaling Jaya. Also present was Stuart Tomlinson, VISA Country Manager Malaysia.
The Maybankard Debit Online Usage Promotion held from 1 December 2010 until 28 February 2011 offered eight MASholidays packages to winners. The joint-promotion between Malaysia Airlines and Maybank was aimed at increasing the awareness and usage of the Maybank family of debit cards, namely the Maybankard Visa Debit and MasterCard Platinum Debit for online purchases of air tickets at Malaysia Airlines’ website. Cardholders who purchased any fare online were automatically registered to win holiday packages to Sydney, Hong Kong, Bali or Langkawi.
Carlito Quismundo, winner of grand holiday packages to Sydney said “I really didn’t expect to win the grand prize. When I entered this contest, I was just aiming for the domestic prize to Langkawi”.
Speaking at the prize giving ceremony, Serena Ho said “Congratulations to the winners. We at Malaysia Airlines are honoured to have partnered Maybank, another world-class local brand, and very grateful for the strong support they have shown in rewarding our valued customers. I’m happy to say that the joint campaign has successfully promoted the convenience of both online purchase and cashless form of payments on our website”
Malaysia Airlines has always put convenience as priority. The recently redesigned malaysiaairlines.com for instance features significant enhancements which includes a clean fresh look and simplified navigation and booking process.

Ravintharan in his speech, thanked the Maybankard Debit cardmembers for their support in the Bank’s first ever partnership with an online merchant for debit card payment. “This campaign was to increase awareness of the value offered by the Maybank family of debit cards for online purchase or e-commerce. The growth in debit card use for e-commerce in this promotion augurs well for greater use of debit cards for travel and holidays. This support has contributed to the increase of over 300% in the total number of e commerce transactions for Maybank last year, compared to the previous year. It demonstrates the increasing popularity of using debit cards for online shopping,” said B. Ravintharan.
With such collaborative effort, customers have an increased awareness that their debit cards can now be easily used for airline travel, above and beyond their everyday shopping and utility items.
