Gateway to ancient Khmer civilisation
Take a flight into this once quaint village, which has now become Cambodia's boomtown, earmarked for various new developments. Most famously, Siem Reap is the gateway to one of the world's most beautiful and important historical sites, Angkor Archaeological Park, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. Spanning 400 square kilometres, the Park houses the magnificent remains of several capitals of the ancient Khmer Empire.
Go to Angkor Wat and marvel at the 216 faces of King Jayarvaman VII carved into the Bayon at the site. When you are all 'templed-out', sit back for a graceful traditional Apsara dance hosted in city or take a trip to the not-to-be-missed Kampung Phluck Floating Village where people live upon the river and children paddle out in small tubs.
