The flower city of the southern frontier
Stroll through the streets of Kunming and you'll feel a sense of calm and tranquillity settle over you. Located high above sea level, the air is cool and the city is surrounded by lush trees, flowers and natural heritage sites. Make a trip to Kunming Lake, the pearl of the Yungui Plateau, and watch the sun rise and set amid the scenic surroundings. For some bird and people watching, go on a stroll at Green Lake Park where musicians play on the paths and locals take a breather. Not to be missed is the 1,200-year old Yuantong Temple, the most important in all of Yunnan.
Remember to visit the Copper Buddha Hall and marvel at the 3.5-metre copper statue. With so much to see, don't forget to try local delicacies like the Eight Treasures of Yunnan. This sweet comprises one part cake, one part ham, and is stuffed with puree and a mix of sesame, peanuts, mushrooms and rutabaga pickle.
