Ministry of Defence Announces Extension of Contract with Malaysia Airlines at Lima 2011

Langkawi, 08 December 2011 : The Malaysian Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) announced today at the Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) 2011 that it was extending Malaysia Airlines’ contract from 2012 till 2014 to provide air transportation for the armed forces personnel of the Malaysian Contingent-United Nation Interim Force in Lebanon (MALCON-UNIFIL).

The Letter of Intent (LOI) was presented by the Secretary General of Ministry of Defence, Dato’ Sri Dr. Haji Ismail bin Haji Ahmad to Malaysia Airlines’ Head of Hajj & Charter, Encik Hisham Haron, witnessed by the Minister of Defence, Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid bin Hamidi.

Under the contract, there will be (2) troop rotations in the months of July and October through 2012 until 2014, where Malaysia Airlines will transport some 5,430 peacekeepers between Kuala Lumpur and Beirut over the three years.

Malaysia Airlines has formed a dedicated unit to ensure all aspects of the MALCON-UNIFIL movement are managed effectively.

Meanwhile at the ceremony, Malaysia Airlines’ Hajj & Charter Department also established an agreement with Angkatan Tentera Malaysia (ATM) to provide ground logistics support for ATM personnel and families flying on Malaysia Airlines scheduled flights between Kuala Lumpur and the East Malaysian regions of Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan. The contract also involves intra-regional air transportation involving Sabah, Sarawak & Wilayah Persekutuan Labuan.

Through this contract, Malaysia Airlines will provide ATM with operational support for ground transportation from transit camps or port units to the airport of embarkation and to designated drop-off points.

Malaysia Airlines’ Hajj & Charter first signed the MALCON-UNIFIL Operation agreement in January 2007, and has since coordinated 13 rotations for MINDEF.

As the registered United Nations (UN) air contractor, Malaysia Airlines’ Hajj and Charter Department has also carried out several movements for the Royal Malaysian Police and Philippines Police on the United Nation peacekeeping mission in Timor Leste (UNMIT & UNIPOL) as well as Indonesian battalion rotation on the same UNIFIL mission in Lebanon.
