Malaysia Airlines' 1st Hajj Flight Departs for Medinah Today

KLIA, Sepang, 29 September 2011 : Malaysia Airlines’ Hajj charter services commenced today with the first flight departing from KL International Airport (KLIA) for Medinah this morning at 11.25 am.

The direct flight MH8000, carrying a total of 447 pilgrims, is scheduled to arrive in Medinah at 3.25pm (local time) on 29 September 2011.

For this Hajj season, Malaysia Airlines will operate 35 direct flights to Jeddah and Medinah, departing from 6 Malaysian points, namely Kuala Lumpur (11), Penang (8), Kuala Terengganu (7), Johor Bahru (6), Kuching (3) and Kota Kinabalu (3), for the period commencing 29 September till 30 October 2011.

Of the 35 flights, the airline will operate a total of 13 direct flights to Medinah and 22 direct flights to Jeddah.

All Hajj flights will be operated using two B747-400 from Malaysia Airlines’ fleet, of which has a seating capacity of 454.

Malaysia Airlines, together with Lembaga Tabung Haji, is committed to provide comprehensive superior and comfortable ground and in-flight service for the pilgrims.

The second phase of the operations from the holy land to Malaysia will begin from 12 November 2011 till 10 December 2011.

Malaysia Airlines has mobilised a team of dedicated personnel to manage and operate the Hajj flights as this operation has unique regulatory requirements and is highly time critical. This will also enhance Malaysia’s reputation of having the best Hajj movement arrangement highly regarded in the Muslim world.

Malaysia Airlines began its first Hajj flight from Kuala Lumpur to Jeddah on 01 April 1974, using leased B707 aircraft. By 1981 due to increased demand, the airline switched to a DC-10 aircraft and in the following year, leased another two B747 aircraft for this service. Except for a short gap, the national carrier has been operating this specialised service for more than 30 years.
