Checked baggage
The amount of checked baggage that you can take with you free of charge will vary according to the route, class of travel, terms and conditions of ticket and Enrich tier status.
For most destinations, your free checked baggage allowance is determined by weight (Weight System). If you’re flying to and from North and South America, your baggage will be calculated by the number of pieces you check in (Piece System).
Weight System (all destinations except North and South America)
| Cabin | Weight / Dimension (length+width+height) |
| First Class | 50 kg (110 lbs) / Not exceeding 158 cm (62 inch) |
| Business Class | 40 kg (88 lbs) / Not exceeding 158 cm (62 inch) |
| Economy Class | 30 kg (66 lbs) / Not exceeding 158 cm (62 inch) |
| Infants | One bag with maximum dimensions of 115 cm (45 inch), which may be carried as cabin baggage and; One fully collapsible baby pushchair or stroller or carrying basket. The weight of the allowed items may not exceed 10 kg (22 lbs) in total. |
The baggage guidelines above will apply to flights from 14 February 2013 onwards irrespective of tickets issued earlier reflecting the lower free allowance.

If you’re travelling to and from North & South America, you are allowed to check-in two pieces of baggage regardless of your class of travel.

Restrictions to weight of single piece of checked baggage on all Malaysia Airlines services
To comply with Global Health and Safety regulations for baggage handlers, Malaysia Airlines has imposed a strict ruling to ensure that each single piece of item or baggage that is checked in DOES NOT exceed 32 kg (70 lbs).
Irrespective of class of travel, any single piece of baggage weighing more than 32 kg (70 lbs) will not be accepted at check-in counters at any station. Customers will be required to reduce the weight by repacking the baggage into smaller units before they are allowed to check in. This regulation equally applies to transit baggage.
We recommend that items exceeding 32 kg (70 lbs) such as bulky musical instruments, sports equipment, as well as photo and film camera equipment should be sent through MASkargo, our cargo service.
Customers can still check-in their bulky musical instruments, sports equipment, photo and film camera equipment as checked baggage but the items must be properly packaged in protective bags or wrap and subject to applicable overweight and oversize baggage charge. Acceptance depends on the capacity of the (various) aircraft operating on the passenger’s routing. If the baggage cannot be accommodated on one of the aircraft, it cannot be accepted for the whole route.
a. For some types of special baggage advance reservations should be made.
Malaysia Airlines may refuse acceptance if deemed necessary.
b. If accepted, the passenger must pack the baggage in such a way that the
item and/or its contents are sufficiently protected to endure ordinary handling.
c. Limited liability may apply for checked-in special baggage.
Excess baggage charges
Should your check-in baggages exceed the amount stated on your ticket, you may be required to pay the extra charges before we can check them into your flight. All payments of excess baggage charges should be made at the airport upon check-in.
Weight System excess baggage rates
Effective 14 February 2013, the charges for checked baggage weights in excess of the free baggage allowance will be calculated depending on zone of travel with a fixed rate applied for every 5 kg of excess baggage weight. The excess baggage rate for each block of 5 kg excess weight will be MYR 30, MYR 60 and MYR 90 respectively depending on zone of travel.
Zone 1 – The rate of MYR 30 applies for each sector in the zone within Malaysia and the ASEAN countries of Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, Philippines, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.
Zone 2 – MYR 60 applies for each sector in the zone beyond Malaysia and ASEAN, covering destinations in India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bangladesh, Nepal, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, New Zealand and Australia.
Zone 3 – The intercontinental rate of MYR 90 will be charged on all travel between Malaysia and the cities of Jeddah, London, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt and Istanbul.
For flights departing from international airports, the charges will be based on the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) value of the applicable zonal charge and to be converted into the local currency of payment during check-in.
The above guidelines apply only for travel on Malaysia Airlines and does not cover code-share flights as well as travel involving other airlines.
Piece System excess baggage rates
For Economy Class, baggage weighing over 23 kg (50 lbs) and up to 32 kg (70 lbs), passengers will be charged USD25/CAD25 per piece for the first 2 pieces.
When a passenger has an excess of the two (2) pieces allowed free baggage allowance within limitations (in dimension and weight for class of travel) the charge is 100% or single charge of published rate. For details on the rates, click here
