Chairman’s Opening Remarks for Malaysia Airlines 2014 AGM

Bismillahirrahmannirrahim.

Assalamualaikum and Good Morning.

Ladies and Gentlemen:

On behalf of the Board of Directors of Malaysian Airline System Berhad, it is my pleasure as your Chairman to welcome you to the 43rd Annual General Meeting of your Company.

Your presence here today is a clear indication of your unwavering support towards the Company, as well as your concern for the business of this Company in which you have an interest. We value your presence.

On today’s agenda, we will comply with the statutory requirements of the AGM.  Today also provides us with the opportunity to update you on our journey, our achievements, the challenges that have brought us to where we are today, developments in the Company and Group over the last financial year, as well as our vision and business plans moving forward. In this way, we hope to address your concerns about your investment in the Company.

With me this morning are your Board of Directors and Company Secretary. Allow me to introduce them, starting from my extreme right.

  • Dr Mohamadon bin Abdullah
  • Tan Sri Krishnan Tan Boon Seng
  • Encik Mohd Shahazwan bin Mohd Harris
  • Encik Ahmad Jauhari bin Yahya
  • Mr. David Lau Nai Pek
  • Tan Sri Dr. Mohd Irwan Serigar Bin Abdullah
  • Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Morshidi bin Abdul Ghani
  • Tan Sri Sukarti bin Wakiman, and
  • Encik Rizani bin Hassan, your Company Secretary

Also with us today are the members of our Management Committee.

Before I initiate the AGM as Chairman, I would like to pay our respects to the 227 passengers and our 12 dear friends and colleagues who were on board Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

Nearly four months on, and despite a relentless multi-nation search for which we will all be eternally grateful, the baffling mystery of flight MH370 remains unsolved.

The friends and family of those on board MH370 remain at the heart of our thoughts and prayers every single day. And we continue to support the search for the answers everyone so desperately craves.

Although as a business, we must conduct the AGM in accordance to the required protocol, I would like to ask you to stand and join me in a minute of silence for all those on board flight MH370 as well as for their families and friends.

[TAN SRI LEAD’S MINUTE’S SILENCE]

Thank you.

(Projection of one slide on MH370)

From the very first day of the aircraft’s disappearance, those on board MH370, their families, friends and loved ones have been at the centre of every action we have taken as a company. From March 8, we provided families with a comprehensive support programme, encompassing financial support, a network of dedicated caregivers, family assistance centres in Beijing and Kuala Lumpur, and a family support centre which remains fully operational today.

Some of you may have seen the videos of our colleagues who worked on the frontline talking about the disappearance of MH370, what it has meant to them and their involvement in the caregiving process. You will agree that their words embody genuine pride, true humility and an absolute commitment to service excellence, traits which underpin the world-class service we provide today. And which will be a cornerstone of the Malaysia Airlines of tomorrow. With the international search for MH370, we continue to support the Malaysian, Australian and other international governments with their search efforts and investigations.

It is against this backdrop that we meet today to discuss the airline’s future. But before we do that, it is worth remembering that for more than 40 years, Malaysia Airlines has brought the world to Malaysia and Malaysia to the world. From the very start, this has been our honour. It remains our privilege today. And it will continue to be so tomorrow.

Like any journey, we have had our highs and our lows. And while we will today address openly and honestly the many challenges we face, let us not forget that your airline holds a number of very real assets whose potential we have yet to fully unleash.

A world-class product, a world-class service with safety a foremost priority– thanks to a world-class engineering arm respected by many in the industry. In addition, as a member of the oneworld alliance network, we can now connect our passengers to some 850 destinations in 150 countries around the world.

However, we know that these assets built over four decades of hard work and commitment have not recently delivered the results, which we all seek. As you will hear from your Chief Executive, the dramatic change required to unlock the true potential of the airline was already firmly on the agenda of our senior team well before 8th March.  But MH370 created a critical point for deep reflection in our history and accelerated the urgent need for more far-reaching and radical action – something your Chief Executive will now address in more detail.
