Malaysia Airlines engineering and Maintenance Signs Two Engineering Services Agreements and An Mou in Lima 2011

Langkawi, 06 December 2011 : Malaysia Airlines Engineering & Maintenance (MAE), the wholly owned Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and two Engineering Services Agreements with three airlines at the 11th Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) 2011.

The first agreement was with Malaysia Airlines’ subsidiary, MASwings, for MAE to provide enhanced total fleet technical management support for MASwings’ ATR72 aircraft flight operations in Sabah and Sarawak. This is a follow up to the existing total fleet technical management support by MAE to MASwings since 2007. The new agreement concluded today will cover more comprehensive services and performance indicators covering technical and engineering management, aircraft engine and component services, and aircraft maintenance execution at line and base operations.

The second agreement signed was with Virgin Australia to provide end-of-lease maintenance of the carrier’s B737-700 and B737-800 aircraft until end December 2012. MAE will be the first international Maintenance and Repair Organisation (MRO) provider to Virgin Australia outside the Australia & New Zealand regions. MAE has further opportunity to conduct more maintenance and modifications on these aircraft as they phase out from Virgin Australia to new operators.

MAE also signed an MoU to provide B737-300 business jet fleet technical management engineering support for Club Excellence, a private jet service company that caters for luxury business travel and leisure golf travel within ASEAN region.

Among the dignitaries who witnessed the signing ceremony were the Director General of Malaysian Department of Civil Aviation YBhg Dato' Azharuddin Abdul Rahman and representatives of the three airlines.

CEO of MASwings, Dato’ Capt Mohd Nawawi Haji Awang signed on behalf of the Borneo-based commuter airline, whilst the General Manager of Virgin Australia Mr. Brian Sharp signed on behalf of the Australian carrier. Mr. Jean Daniels, Director of Club Excellence signed on behalf of the Malaysian private jet carrier.

The CEO of MAE, Encik Mohd Roslan Ismail signed the two agreements and the MoU on behalf of the national carrier.

Speaking at the signing ceremony Mr Mohd Roslan said, “The agreements and MoU mark another achievement of Malaysia Airlines’ aggressive drive to market its exceptional engineering and maintenance support expertise. It is also testimony to the airline’s contribution in expanding business opportunities towards increasing national, regional and global competitiveness of the country’s MRO sector as envisioned in the objectives of Malaysia's Economic Transformation Plan driven by PEMANDU”.

“We have put in a lot of effort to secure and expand our market reach into the Australian market for the past 3 years. The input from Virgin Australia, the second largest operator in Australia with more than 70 aircraft after Qantas, gives us a good entry point into the Pacific region market.  As regards Club Excellence, we have been providing base maintenance services to its business jet since 2009. We are very honoured and excited to further expand our services to Club Excellence,” he added.

During the ceremony, MAE also received an award letter from KLM Royal Dutch Airlines for heavy maintenance of its B747-400 aircraft throughout 2012.
