Malaysia Airlines Chairman, Tan Sri Dato' Dr. Munir Majid Retires at End of Term

Kuala Lumpur, 20 July 2011 : Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Mohd. Munir bin Abdul Majid will stand down as Chairman of Malaysian Airline System Berhad when his current term expires on 31 July 2011. He announced this to his fellow directors at the end of Malaysia Airlines’ board meeting today, the last such meeting he chaired.

Tan Sri Dr. Munir, who is also Chairman of Bank Muamalat Malaysia Berhad, has a distinguished career in the Malaysian private and public sectors. He was Group Editor of the New Straits Times (where he served from 1979 to 1986), Chairman and Chief Executive of CIMB (1986 to 1993), and first and founding Chairman of the Securities Commission (1993 to 1999). Subsequently he served on the Boards of the then Telekom Malaysia Berhad and Celcom Malaysia Berhad (where he was Chairman from 2002 to 2004), before joining the Board of Malaysia Airlines and then becoming its Chairman in August 2004.

With his academic qualification – B.Sc (Econ) and Ph.D in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) – and wide corporate experience, Tan Sri Dr. Munir was appointed Visiting Senior Fellow at LSE IDEAS (Centre for International Affairs, Diplomacy and Strategy) in 2008 where he heads the Southeast Asia International Affairs Programme. He is a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London, Fellow of MIDAS (Malaysian Institute of Defence and Security) in the Ministry of Defence and on the Panel of Distinguished Fellows of IDFR (Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia. Tan Sri Dr. Munir has presented many papers both locally and internationally on aviation as well as international affairs.
